Fill In The Blank

was the second to last assignment from my Drawing class.

We were given the right side of an image, and the left side of a different image, and told that we needed to somehow make them fit together. I had alot of fun with this one, using loose black ink and white acrylic paint.

My Time Map

For my Drawing class we had to create a time line using a map. This project was very process intensive for me.

I began by taking a trip to the map library. I photocopied images of interesting and old-fashioned maps.

I soaked them in black tea,

and then I laid them out to dry.

I painted the landmass' in colored ink, and soaked and dried them some more. At some point I baked them to give them a warmer color.

Then I began assembaling them,

positioning them this way and that. To see what worked best.

When I'd settled on an arrangement I taped them together and began stitching.

It is currently hanging in our hallway across from my door.

bird as metaphor

this was the first interesting project we had in my intermediate drawing class this semester. the prompt was bird as metaphor. i was playing with the theme of the caged bird, and the idea that we can all build cages around ourselves with ideas, or possessions.

i first made two collages. they're on cardboard, and assembled from magazine images, cut paper and found objects.

both collages express the same idea through slightly different imagery. i initally thought the first was more successful than the second, but now i've become fond of the second as well. they are both hanging on my wall.

for the second part of the project i decided to sew a bird costume for my roomate's doll. i then took a million pictures of her building a nest/cage around herself and filling it with her treasures. here she is surveying her handiwork.

(i love the colors)
